Site Description

This site has two flyable faces, SE and W.

Parking

Bottom: turn right into yard immediately to the east of Moelfre Hall Farm (grid reference SJ187283), through gate. Park off the track in the field before the next gate. Near South East face: limited parking available near TO, adjacent to wall at end of track. Near West face: park where hard track ends.

CarryUp

Both faces are approached by a steep and rough track starting at Moelfre Hall Farm - grid reference SJ187283. Two wheel drive cars should not attempt to drive up to the take-off sites. The track forks at the top - turn right for the SE face and left for the W. The SE launch area is adjacent to the top parking area with no further carry up involved.

Takeoff and Top Landing

SE face

Not the easiest site for hang gliders to top land; the take-off / landing area is small, and extreme care is needed if wind is off to east or west, because of turbulence. Do not land over the fence to the east of take-off.

West Face

The westerly face is definitely not a site for beginners or inexperienced pilots. The lift band is surprisingly narrow and care is needed when several gliders are flying. Sink can be experienced above the quarry to the left of the ridge.

Take off is from a small rounded area to the west of the fence that runs along the top of the ridge, and is approached via a stile at the junction of two fences. Top landing is possible only on the flat ground where the gravelled track ends: below this, rotor can be expected.

Bottom landings can be made in the SE landing field only if sufficient height has been gained. A minimum of 150 ft / 45m ATO at the west face is necessary. At the foot of the west face, paragliders may land in the field at map reference SJ177288. This field cannot be seen from take-off, and is not suitable for hang glider landings.

Bottom Landing

SE face

The SE bottom landing field slopes downhill slightly, so cross / uphill landings are often performed, especially by those on high performance hang gliders. The bottom landing field is adjacent to the bottom parking area and easily reached by all gliders.

Notes

This site becomes dangerously turbulent if the wind is not directly onto the slope. This site is also used by Beyond Extreme Paragliding School - extra care should be taken when paraglider students are present
